"Promoting Clinical Field-Based Competencies
and Best Practices Through Internships"

Technical Assistance Workshop
Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, Atlanta, GA
April 24 - 25, 2009

The HBCU-CFE Technical Assistance workshop was designed to enhance the skills of HBCU faculty in developing and increasing internship opportunities in addiction for HBCU students. As noted by the Institute of Medicine and other national reports, there is a tremendous need to promote workforce diversity in behavioral health. One major goal of the HBCU-CFE is to promote the development of a diverse workforce by exposing students to practical experiences in the field of addiction through opportunities such as internships, and to support students through mentoring and leadership training. To further accomplish this goal, the HBCU-CFE will provide Workforce Development Mini-Grants in 2009-2010 for internships in the field of addiction to HBCU Institutions submitting successful applications.

This workshop included presentations and breakout sessions and highlighted model internship programs and case examples. Faculty left with increased knowledge and skills for promoting student exposure to career options in the substance abuse field; methods for providing students with course credit for participation in an internship program and strategies for successful collaboration with state licensure boards along with networking and other relevant information.

This workshop was sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) Partners for Recovery Initiative.
