SAMHSA's Understanding Mental Illness-after the Virginia Tech Tragedy
The tragic shootings on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University have raised many questions regarding mental illness. SAMHSA offers the following materials so that we all can become better informed about this important topic.

The American Counseling Association (ACA)
A not-for-profit professional and educational organization dedicated to the growth and enhancement of the counseling profession. Founded in 1952, ACA is the world's largest association exclusively representing professional counselors in various practice settings. Both students and professionals can join ACA.

American Academy of Healthcare Providers
in the Addictive Disorders

In 1988, the American Academy of Healthcare Providers in the Addictive Disorders succeeded in creating the Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) credential, which reflects the highest and most comprehensive standard in the field today. The CAS covers alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, gambling addiction, and sexual addiction.

SAMHSA Awards $1.5 million to Advance Studies of Behavioral Health Services in Historically Black
Colleges and Universities
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration today announced the award of a cooperative agreement totaling $1.5 million over three years to the Morehouse School of Medicine’s Cork Institute on Alcohol and other Addictive Disorders, located within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in Atlanta.
